Special Beer My Son Brought Over for the Holidays

special beer
Special beer, Obama Hope Beer, made in Ukraine.

Special beer for the holidays is a nice addition. It is Christmas Eve and I, in my artcar shirt, have just settled down when my son brings over a few rare bottles of beer for the celebration with his sister and me. He has access to all kinds of brews because he’s one of the owners of a beer garden called Axelrad.

One of the beers was a stout called Obama Hope.  As you can see, the label sports an image of Obama leaning back in a big easy chair with his legs crossed and a big smile on his face. He wears no tie with his suit and he has a cigarette in his right hand.

A Special Beer with a Voice

He looks like he’s having a swell time. Not a care in the world. If you look real close, you see a smiling Dick Cheney on his right wearing a Russian-looking shirt and two pearl-handled six-guns strapped down for the quick draw. On the left of Obama is a dire-looking Homer Simpson with a mug of beer in his hand. There’s a lot of text on the sides and back of the label. Some of it’s in a foreign language, but there’s enough in English to say, “Made in Ukraine” and the following short paragraph:

“As the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama is the symbol of democracy and a guarantor of the global justice. The main task of the world leaders is to safeguard peace and to prevent a new aggressor from starting World War III, as it already happened twice in recent history. In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea and occupied part of Ukraine. This violated the world order established after World War II and set off the expansion of the Russian terrorism in peaceful Europe. Obama is still hesitating to provide real help to the Ukrainians in fighting it. He has all the chances to go down in history as the one who got it all wrong.”

The Humor on this Special Beer is Not So Funny

I’ve seen beer used for a lot of things, especially now that there are craft breweries all over the place. Some of the names are fun and show attitude. But using beer to make a political point breaks new ground.

The first thing I saw in it was humor, but I see the humor in everything. Obama with caustic Dick Cheney and cartoon Homer Simpson? Gotta be a joke, right? Then I read the message and felt for the Ukrainians.

But what are you gonna do? Drop bombs on Russia? Talk about World War III. Then I wondered how they got this beer out of Ukraine with the Russians occupying the place. Then I thought how genius it was to use a beer label as a way to get an editorial message out to the west.

Special Beer as an Editorial Could Have Us Crying in our Cups

Drink up, special beer lovers. You never know when you’re going to be called upon as a state department diplomat in this crazy new world order.
